As part of the ongoing Kwibuka31 commemoration activities, INES-Ruhengeri will host a powerful screening of the documentary Beyond the Genocide this Friday, June 13, 2025, on campus.
This screening is part of the nationwide “Beyond the Genocide: Secondary Schools & Universities Tour”, a peace education initiative organized by Never Again Rwanda in collaboration with Zion Films Company Ltd. The film, directed by Zion Sulaiman Mukasa Matovu, explores Rwanda’s history before, during, and after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, highlighting personal testimonies and national recovery.
The event is designed to engage students in critical conversations about remembrance, unity, and reconciliation. After the screening, students will participate in a facilitated discussion session, where they can reflect on the film and ask questions directly to the facilitators.
The event program for Friday, June 13, 2025, will begin with student arrival from 17:30 to 18:00, coordinated by the organizing team. At 18:00, INES-Ruhengeri staff will deliver opening remarks, followed by a brief introduction from Never Again Rwanda staff at 18:05. The film screening will take place from 18:10 to 19:45, presented by the director of Beyond the Genocide, Zion Sulaiman Mukasa Matovu. The evening will conclude with a post-screening dialogue and Q&A session from 19:45 to 20:30, facilitated by the event's discussion leaders.
The film has been officially authorized by MINUBUMWE for public screening, both within Rwanda and abroad, following a thorough review. Institutions like INES-Ruhengeri have been invited to host this film as part of efforts to promote peace education and civic engagement among youth.
The INES community is encouraged to attend in large numbers. Participation by student associations, peace clubs, and academic departments is highly encouraged to help foster a deep and inclusive conversation around Rwanda’s history and the responsibilities of young people in shaping a peaceful future.
We look forward to welcoming you this Friday for an evening of film, learning, and unity.
