INES LABORATORIES

INES-RUHENGERI has selected the Applied Sciences direction following a thorough examination of the labour market environment and the identification of a significant issue pertaining to the mismatch between university products (graduates) and labour market demands in the area. The new focus of Applied Sciences is found in its search for the best method to obtain its educational services.

Since INES is an Institute of Applied Sciences, its academic program and community engagement initiatives must meet certain criteria. These include: (1) academic programs that are designed to meet students' professional needs as well as those of the real community; (2) a more competency-based educational methodology that emphasizes the integration of classroom theory and practice with professional context generic competences; (3) research activities that center on applied research conducted in partnership with the workplace; and (4) close ties with business and industry to support regional development. To achieve these goals laboratories are the pillars to be emphasized for teaching and learning, research and community engagement.

Chemistry laboratory

The chemistry lab is mainly used by all levels of Biotechnology department, it is also used by Biomedical Laboratory Science level I and Civil Engineering department level I for chemistry courses according to the program and Modules. It is involved in community engagement as it is a designated testing laboratory which offer different testing services.

Food microbiology laboratory

The Ines Food Microbiology Laboratory is mainly used by Biotechnology department. The main purpose of this laboratory is teaching, research, and community engagement. facilitate the students of to learn their practice courses in order for being oriented in their career. It is also involved in community engagement as it is a designated testing laboratory which offer different testing services.

Clinical microbiology laboratory

The Ines Clinical Microbiology Laboratory is mainly used by Biomedical laboratory science department. The main purpose of this laboratory is teaching, research, and community engagement. It facilitate the students of to learn their practice courses in order for being oriented in medical laboratory career.

Tissue Culture laboratory

Tissue culture lab is mainly used by both students of plant biotechnology and their staff. It is also involved in community engagement by Multiplication of Irish potato, and pre-basic seeds production.

Haematology and Immunohaematology laboratory

Haematology aims at teaching and learning activities. It is mainly used by the students of Biomedical laboratory sciences department at all levels with all tests related to human blood.

Parasitology laboratory

Parasitology Laboratory is one of teaching laboratories at INES-RUHENGERI and is mainly used by students in the department of Biomedical Laboratory Sciences. In this Laboratory, students are trained the performance of basic practices necessary for the diagnosis of parasitic diseases related to medical parasitology.

Molecular biology laboratory

Molecular biology laboratory is one of teaching laboratories at INES-RUHENGERI and is mainly used by students in the department of both Biomedical Laboratory Sciences and Biotechnology departments. It trains students on the basic practices of molecular biology such as RNA and DNA determination.

Clinical biochemistry

Clinical Chemistry Lab at INES Ruhengeri is intended to serve the practical educational needs of students in Biomedical Laboratory Sciences Department. It is concerned with measurement of amounts of biologically important substances ‘analytes’ in body fluids like blood and urine among others. The students are trained in laboratory techniques for diagnosis of different clinical pathology: liver, kidney, heart, pancreas, muscles diseases and metabolic diseases.

Food processing unit

Food processing unit intend to guide food scientist students in better understanding of processing techinics and principles. It is mainly used by the students of food biotechnology for better orientation in their carrier.

Water quality laboratory

This laboratory is used by civil engineering and water engineering departments where it trains students on water quality testing either for construction purpose, waste water or potable water. It is also involved in community engagement as it is a designated testing laboratory which offer different testing services.

Hydraulic laboratory

This laboratory is used by civil engineering and water engineering departments where it trains students on water quantity testing especially before installing water treatment plants, construction of infrastructure and roads.

Material testing laboratory

This laboratory is used by civil engineering and water engineering departments. It trains students on soil testing. It is also involved in community engagement as it is a designated testing laboratory which offer different testing services.

Physics laboratory

The physics laboratory is hosted by the department of civil engineering, but is also used by other departments where physics is taught. The following are the main goals of the physics laboratory

Histopathology Laboratory

This laboratory is under the Biomedical Laboratory Sciences department and it serves in the research activities, teaching, and learning process.

Center for Genomic Biology

The Center for Genomic Biology was established under the partnership between INES-Ruhengeri, Brown University, and North Carolina University in the USA. Currently, the Center starts by the project assessing the Artemisinin resistance in Rwanda and neighboring countries as Malaria is a serious human killer in the region. It is a project for 4 years.
