INES-Ruhengeri Secures Second Place in National “Ndi Umunyarwanda” University Initiative

On June 20, 2025, leaders from 42 higher learning institutions across Rwanda gathered at Lemigo Hotel in Kigali for the closing ceremony of Phase IV of the Ndi Umunyarwanda initiative. The event brought together university administrators, student representatives from Unity and Resilience Clubs, lecturers aligned with the program’s vision, Unity Club Intwararumuri officials, program partners, and members of the press.

The half-day event, which ran from morning until early afternoon, marked a significant milestone in national efforts to promote unity, resilience, and the prevention of genocide ideology within academic institutions. A central focus of the event was a panel discussion exploring the critical role universities play in shaping a generation of young Rwandans grounded in national identity and unity.

Agenda items included presentations of student-led activities implemented during the 2024–2025 academic year, a discussion on the strategic direction of Phase V, reflections from participants, and an award ceremony honouring outstanding Unity and Resilience Clubs. Attendees also shared feedback on the presented reports and discussed ways to strengthen collaboration across institutions.

Out of the 32 universities that actively participated in this phase, INES-Ruhengeri was recognized as one of the top performers, earning second place nationally. The institution received a certificate of recognition and a cash award of 1,000,000 Rwandan Francs. Judges praised INES-Ruhengeri for its well-executed project, full implementation of planned activities, and creative engagement strategies that extended beyond campus to the wider community.

Award recipients were selected based on several factors, including the quality of project execution, the presence of innovative practices, and the involvement of both institutional leadership and student mentors in the initiative.

Speakers commended the leadership and commitment demonstrated by universities during Phase IV and encouraged continued collaboration as the initiative moves into its next phase. The guest of honor emphasized the importance of sustained efforts in nurturing a generation that embraces unity and upholds the values of reconciliation and resilience.
