INES-Ruhengeri Trains Experts in Geotechnical Engineering to Strengthen Infrastructure Foundations

28 May 2025

INES-Ruhengeri is now offering a specialized Master of Science in Geotechnical Engineering, designed to produce highly skilled professionals capable of managing the underground complexities of modern infrastructure.

As construction and urban development surge across Rwanda and Africa, the need for experts who understand the behavior of soils, rocks, and underground structures has never been more critical. This 2-year postgraduate program bridges advanced theory and practical fieldwork to ensure the stability, safety, and sustainability of construction projects.

“You cannot build the future on weak foundations,” said one of the program lecturers. “Our Master’s in Geotechnical Engineering is about producing engineers who can design and manage safe and efficient infrastructure from the ground up.”

Students explore a wide range of topics including slope stability, rock mechanics, earthworks, and underground construction. The program emphasizes geotechnical investigation, lab testing, computer modeling, and a final-year industrial-based Master’s Thesis focused on solving real-world engineering challenges.

Who Is It For?

The program is open to applicants with a Bachelor’s Degree in:

  • Civil Engineering

  • Structural Engineering

  • Construction Engineering

  • Geotechnical Engineering

Applicants must hold at least a Second Class Upper Division and meet equivalency requirements set by Rwanda’s Higher Education Council (HEC) for foreign degrees.

Career Pathways

Graduates will be qualified to work in diverse sectors including:

  • Geotechnical and Foundation Design Firms
