On
June 19, 2024, UWEZO Youth Empowerment at the Main Hall of INES-Ruhengeri,
under the leadership of its Founder and Executive Director BAHATI Satir Omar, delivered
a public talk on disability, accessibility and inclusion to students and staff
of INES-Ruhengeri. The talk aimed to foster a more inclusive environment for
persons with disabilities.
The primary goal of the session was to provide participants with foundational knowledge on disability matters, ensuring that INES-Ruhengeri becomes a more inclusive institution for persons with disabilities.
The talk covered a comprehensive agenda that included exercises to explore common misconceptions and challenges faced by persons with disabilities. Participants engaged in activities designed to deepen their understanding of disability and its impact on individuals and society.
The session emphasized that participation restriction results from the interaction between persons with impairments and various barriers. The public talk referenced the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD), highlighting the need for full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others.
The
guest speaker concluded with a powerful call to action, urging participants to
embrace inclusion and actively work to remove barriers, prioritize the
experiences and perspectives of persons with disabilities, and commit to
ongoing efforts to ensure accessibility and inclusion.
The INES Student Support Centre organized this activity as part of the ANSWER Project.
