The atmosphere at the INES-Ruhengeri campus was nothing short of heavenly this past Saturday, March 21, 2026, as thousands gathered to welcome the new intake of students with a high-energy gospel celebration featuring Rwandan superstar Israel Mbonyi.
The event, which drew an estimated 5,000 participants, brought together students, staff, and distinguished guests for an evening of worship, inspiration, and community building.
A Showcase of Homegrown Talent
Before the headliner took to the stage, the audience was treated to a vibrant display of talent from INES-Ruhengeri’s own student body. The campus's renowned choirs and local artists set a joyful tone for the evening: St. Augustin Choir, Amis du Ciel, RSA and CEP Choirs. Also, Dizzo, a rising young talent who captivated the crowd with an energetic performance.

"Icyambu" Takes the Stage
As the clock struck 6:00 PM, the man of the hour, Israel Mbonyi (affectionately known by fans as "Icyambu"), stepped onto the stage to a thunderous roar of applause. Over the course of three hours, Mbonyi led the crowd through a powerful repertoire of his most beloved hits, including: Icyambu, Nina Siri, Yeriko and many more.


The singer paused during his set to express his deep gratitude to the INES-Ruhengeri management. "I am honored to be invited to praise the Lord with this vibrant community," Mbonyi remarked, acknowledging the immense love and energy shown by the students.
Excellence in Academics and Values
The event wasn't solely about music; it served as a platform for mentorship. Fr. Dr. Fabien Hagenimana, the former Vice Chancellor, delivered an moving speech that challenged students to look beyond their textbooks.

"I encourage you to focus on gaining applied skills and, crucially, to uphold the moral values that represent what INES-Ruhengeri truly stands for. We train you to be leaders of integrity," Dr. Hagenimana stated.
Dr. Charline Uwilingiyimana, Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academics and Research, echoed these sentiments. On behalf of the university, she thanked Israel Mbonyi for his presence and emphasized that such events are vital for a "comfortable and joyful environment that facilitates learning."

Organized by the INES Chaplaincy in partnership with the Student Guild Council, this annual concert is a cornerstone of the university’s orientation program. It aims to integrate new students into campus life, ensuring they feel welcomed into a supportive and spirited community from day one.
As the show concluded at 9:00 PM, the consensus among the tired but smiling students was clear: the academic year 2026 has officially begun on a high note.
