Marie Lys IRAKOZE is an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Biotechnology at INES-Ruhengeri. She holds a Master’s degree in Food Science and Technology from Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT), Kenya, where she graduated with distinction. She is currently enrolled in a PhD Programme in Civil and Environmental Engineering, International Cooperation and Mathematics (Health Track) at the University of Brescia, Italy.

Her research focuses on the fermentation of African indigenous vegetables to enhance their nutritional value, safety, and shelf life. She has published several peer-reviewed articles, contributing significantly to the field of food biotechnology.

Beyond academia, Ms. Irakoze brings diverse practical experience and leadership in food systems innovation, including:
• Assistant Lecturer at INES-Ruhengeri (2023–Present), where she educates and mentors future food scientists.
• Africa Food Fellow with the African Food Fellowship, advancing food systems transformation for food security and sustainability.
• CEO and Founder of Keza Farm Ltd, managing a banana plantation and promoting sustainable agriculture.
• Regional Ambassador for Thought For Food (TFF), championing innovation in global food systems.
• Graduate Assistant and Intern at the DeKUT Coffee Technology Centre, supporting research in microbial fermentation and coffee processing.

Her vision includes promoting indigenous crops, reducing food loss and waste, and improving food safety standards. She actively participates in regional and international forums, sharing knowledge and collaborating on initiatives that promote sustainable agriculture and food system resilience.

Marie Lys IRAKOZE’s dedication has been recognised through numerous awards and fellowships, including:
